Painting Faculty Member Modou Dieng a Critic's Pick on Artforum

by Marketing & Communications,

Modou Dieng, Assistant Professor of Painting and Drawing, is now listed as a Critic's Pick on Artforum.com for Black Star, his work currently on view at "The Art Gym at Marylhurst University":http://www.marylhurst.edu/theartgym/2009artstars.php. The work is shown in conjunction with Io Palmer's ArtStars, on view through December 13.

Modou Dieng is a native of Senegal, where he earned a BFA from the École National des Beaux-Arts in Dakar. He now holds an MFA at the San Francisco Art Institute in 2006 and has shown his work widely throughout the United States and Europe. Dieng also manages "Work/Sound Gallery":http://www.myspace.com/worksoundpdx in Southeast Portland.

From the review:
"Dieng overlays silk-screened images of Malcolm X with actual albums (and their covers) by Louis Armstrong, Aretha Franklin, and Isaac Hayes. The albums transmit a vibrant, kinetic energy and hark back to Marcel Duchamp's Rotorelief devices. Yet Dieng takes on the history of the readymade and Pop art with a fresh attitude and finesse."
