This year’s mentor Visiting Assistant Professor Chelsea Couch. Funding for this program is made possible through a generous, multi-year pledge from Terry N. Shuchat '62.
This year, the Shuchat Fellowship recipients in art are Oakley Rae Phoenix and Parker Sullivan Jones. Visit the Art Building’s Student Gallery (room 211), Little Gallery (room 208), and Installation Gallery (room 202).
The 2022 Shuchat Projects, in each artist’s own words:
Oakley Rae Phoenix, sexporatorium
"sexploratorium is a collaborative mixed-media project focusing on themes of recovery from (mis)informed sex ed., the power held in transformative intimate settings, and the responsibility young adults have to help support the sexual safety and growth of their peers. For sexploratorium, Oak sat down to interview dozens of young adults to learn about their experiences with sex and sex ed., and began to identify common experiences, knowledge gaps, horror stories, and highlight moments. From these conversations, Oak found ways to creatively illustrate and weave together the most common and striking themes into 3-dimensional forms that now carry a synthesized memory of our shared (im)plausible history."
Parker Sullivan Jones, The Process of Getting in Touch
"Getting in Touch is a six part multi media project in which the artist explores the six universal emotions: happiness, sadness, anger, surprise, fear, and disgust. Viewers are encouraged to interact with pieces and reflect on how they experience emotions in their own lives."
Some words from this year’s mentor, Visiting Assistant Professor Chelsea Couch
"Mentoring Shuchat Fellowships is a great honor and truly so much fun! Getting to watch and support the growth, development, and completion of fast-paced independent projects is creatively exhilarating, and I am so proud of the work that Oakley and Parker brought into existence this summer. Additionally, getting to collaborate and critique with the fellow mentors and participants from Music and Theater provided such a rich, ongoing conversation. We are thrilled to share two exhibitions with you at the start of our semester; please swing by ART after your first day of classes to join us in celebration."
