“Fannie Lou Hamer’s America,” a documentary on one of America’s greatest but lesser-known civil rights activists, will air next week on PBS and the World Channel.
Built on the work of Associate Professor of Civic Communication and Media Maegan Parker Brooks, the film's senior researcher and historical consultant, "Fannie Lou Hamer's America" features rare archival recordings of Hamer's songs, interviews and speeches. The documentary is the first full-length film on the Mississippi sharecropper-turned activist that’s told entirely in her own words. The film's rough cut was screened at the university’s annual Martin Luther King celebration in 2020.
Former CCM Professor Pablo Correa also contributed to the film as a videographer and former Willamette grants specialist, Tara M. Gregg, helped secure the funding for it.
The film will air Feb. 22 at 9 p.m. EST on PBS and Feb. 24 at 8 p.m. EST on the World Channel.
