Assistant Professor of Finance Seongkyu (Gilbert) Park has been named the recipient of the 2023 Renjen Prize for Faculty Excellence.
Established through a generous gift from Punit (MM’86) and Heather Renjen, the Renjen Prize recognizes the accomplishments of early career faculty members from the College of Arts and Sciences or the Atkinson Graduate School of Management, especially those whose work has been widely disseminated and garnered recognition in the public sphere. In addition to the recognition, recipients of the award are provided financial support for scholarly and creative projects.
Park began teaching at the Atkinson Graduate School of Management in August 2022 and is already known among students for the quality of his teaching–particularly his clarity and passion–and the way he fosters critical and creative thinking.
Park views finance and other business disciplines as not only related to business matters; he encourages his students to apply finance to their careers and daily lives. “I want to empower students with critical thinking to help them with decision-making in the real world and at all stages of their lives,” said Park.
His teaching and mentoring ranges widely across the curriculum–from an undergraduate business course, to graduate courses on investment and corporate finance, to the two-semester O’Neill Investment Fund in which second-year MBA students manage a real investment portfolio and engage in real trading activities.
Park’s research lies in the broad area of financial economics, including market microstructure, behavioral finance, derivatives, and asset pricing. His most recently accepted paper, “Who Profits from Trading Options?” co-authored with Jianfeng Hu (Singapore Management University), Atonia Kirilova (CUNEF University), and Doojin Ryu (Sungkyunkwan University), which will appear in Management Science, a top tier, peer-reviewed academic journal.

Born and raised in India, Punit Renjen is a 1987 graduate of the Atkinson Graduate School of Management. Through a career spanning more than 30 years, Renjen held numerous leadership roles within Deloitte. After serving as Deloitte’s Global CEO for 7 years, Renjen retired in 2022. Renjen currently serves on President Biden’s Export Council and as chairman on SAP’s supervisory board.
