Jenny Delgado, A.I.A., LEED AP Principal and education practice leader at architect firm CannonDesign, and Jezarely Miguel, founder and designer of home decor brand Matiz, will share their journeys and what worked for them in their respective careers at the Nov. 3 event, which will be held 9-10:30 a.m. at Pacific Northwest College of Art.

Delgado, who is from the Mexican Yucatán, migrated from the U.S. as a single mother after receiving her bachelor’s degree. She joined CannonDesign in 2005, rising from an entry-level architect role to education practice leader and partner at CannonDesign.

“Looking back, I’m proud that becoming an architect and the arc of my career truly was purposeful,” she said in a story for VoyageLA. “I grew up in Merida…and I carry so much of that experience with me today.”

She used to watch her brothers, both architecture students, push their drafting tables together to work side-by-side, and she saw herself becoming an architect, she said.

Miguel has a background in the architecture and design industry. She started her career as a commercial interior designer and later developed a strong interest in sustainability in design.

Infused with Miguel’s appreciation of natural materials and ingredients, the brand Matiz features wool rugs created by artisans in Oaxaca, Mexico.

“Ever since I traveled to Mexico for the first time, I was like, I am so proud to be Mexican,” Miguel said in Medium. “Our culture is so beautiful. The people are just one of a kind. The colors, the architecture, the streets, the food, everything.”

Co-sponsored by CannonDesign and PNCA Design, the event is hosted by Design Museum Everywhere. It is part of their “Design Museum Live” series, a monthly hybrid event series for Design Museum Everywhere members that alternates between venues in Portland and Boston.

This event is free for students and PNCA educators, but registration is required. Watch Today@Willamette for the discount code to access free admission, then sign up here
