Willamette launches 2021-2022 strategic planning process

by Provost and Senior Vice President Carol Long ,

Willamette University will launch its 2021-2022 strategic planning process with a series of context-setting panel discussions during the first two weeks of October.

These moderated discussions, called Compass Conversations, will engage university leaders and external experts around three themes critical to understanding the environmental landscape of 21st century higher education. These discussions will help to create a shared baseline for a second phase of campus-wide, collaborative discussions that will bring together students, faculty, staff, and alumni to explore, articulate and implement a compelling vision for the future.

These sessions will be live-streamed via Zoom and recorded for those who cannot attend them live. We invite campus community members to pose questions and comments before and after the sessions (via an online form), as well as during the sessions (via Zoom’s Q&A function).

The schedule for these Compass Conversations is as follows:

Session I: Our changing student body

Tuesday, Oct. 5, noon - 1 p.m.

Bringing together campus experts around enrollment, student affairs, and institutional data, this session will explore how social and cultural trends are shaping higher education.

Session II: How can Willamette meet the needs of our region and the world?

Thursday, Oct. 7, 9 - 10 a.m.

This second session will gather the academic leadership from each of Willamette’s four colleges to explore how our university can rise to meet the needs of our region and the world.

Session III: What makes a great university?

Monday, Oct. 11, Time TBD

We will conclude the series with a group of panelists who will begin to imagine how Willamette might best respond to the changes and challenges identified in the prior two sessions as we shape our university’s future.
