Response to federal review of Title IX guidance

by Jackie Balzer, Title IX Coordinator,

Willamette will continue its best-practice processes for prevention of and response to sexual misconduct.

On Friday, Sept. 22, U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos announced the release of new interim federal guidance for colleges about handling matters of potential sexual misconduct. While the guidance gives institutions an opportunity to make changes to their processes, Willamette’s current system will remain in place. We believe that Willamette’s practices provide for thorough, timely, and equitable responses and are in-line with best practices among higher education institutions.

According to last week’s guidance, the Department of Education will begin the rulemaking process for handling matters of sexual misconduct under Title IX. During the review and comment period, we will work with industry partners to support rules that protect the safety of our students and community.

At willamette.edu/notalone, you can find more information about the university’s sexual misconduct system, learn more about prevention and intervention, access resources for people affected by sexual misconduct, or report an incident.
