Albertsons Cos., the parent organization of Safeway and other grocery stores, named Jonathan Mayes JD’87 its senior vice president of external affairs and chief diversity officer Friday. Mayes has worked for Safeway and Albertsons since 1994.
Mayes’ most recent position was senior vice president of public affairs, government relations, sustainability, philanthropy and diversity affairs.
Bob Miller, chairman and CEO, said the company has a responsibility to grow a diverse workforce and to have a positive impact on the communities it serves.
“Diversity is vital to who we are as a company,” Miller said, “and I am pleased to have found someone within our team who champions our culture and values.”
Mayes said he is honored to be appointed to the new position.
“Albertsons Cos. has developed a corporate culture that fosters different values, ideas and backgrounds, providing a firm foundation that will enable us to continue to attract a diverse set of talent and help our stores better engage with the local communities we serve,” Mayes said.
Mayes earned his undergraduate degree in social science from Warner Pacific College and his JD from Willamette Law in 1987. He has been given many honors and awards for his commitments to diversity and service.
