  • service project picking up trash and debris
Take a Break students volunteered at Environmental Services Portland in 2016. They picked up trash and debris along the streets and from the storm-water collection planters of the “green streets.”

As part of Willamette’s 175th anniversary celebration, Bearcats across campus and around the world will embody the university’s motto of service and community on March 11.

The Office of Community Service Learning and the Office of Alumni and Parent Engagement are working together to organize multiple project sites where students, faculty, staff, alumni and friends can get together and make a difference.

In Salem, seven service sites are available, and community members are encouraged to sign up as soon as possible. All participants will receive a special T-shirt to wear during the project.

Willamette’s Day of Service will span the West Coast, with other volunteer projects taking place in San Francisco, Los Angeles, Portland and Seattle. Alumni and friends are encouraged to invite friends in those regions to join “Team Willamette.”

Alumni located beyond Salem or the other participating cities can still join in the spirit of service by volunteering in their communities on March 11. Anyone who contacts the alumni office by March 1 can request a T-shirt for such projects.

Participants are encouraged to take photos during their service projects and share them using the hashtags #Willamette175 and #TeamWillamette. Photos will be shared during a special reception on campus at the conclusion of the Salem-based projects.

The Day of Service coincides with Willamette’s 15th annual Social Pow wow, presented by the Native and Indigenous Student Union. The Pow wow’s “Grand Entrance” begins at 4 p.m. in Sparks Center’s Cone Field House.
