In the heart of 1940s Texas, a wealthy couple want to “toughen up” a nephew visiting from New York. Instead, a visit to the seedy Casablanca Hotel illuminates secrets and ignites jealousies.
Opening March 10 at Willamette, "The Hotel Casablanca" is a two-act opera by American composer Thomas Pasatieri. Sung in English, it relates a comic tale of love and mistaken identity.
“This fast-paced and funny opera is perfect for people who have never seen an opera before,” says director Allison Swensen-Mitchell. “The audience will see a dynamic cast, lively staging, dancing and a stunning set.”
Loosely based on “A Flea in her Ear” by Gorges Feydeau, the opera follows the antics of Tom and Callulah Carter. The couple own the Double T Ranch, and their interactions with hotel guests result in a series of misunderstandings and betrayals.
For music director Hector Agüero, the opera is enhanced by the music, which he describes as a “perfect balance of wit, charm, beauty and passion.”
“Although this particular work is a comedy, there are some wonderful moments where the music conveys anticipation, love, passion and even anger,” he says.
The opera debuted in 2007 in San Francisco.
