Willamette alum Mark O. Hatfield '43 is best remembered in Oregon for his major contributions toward building the economic, education, transportation and scientific infrastructure of the state. Less well-remembered today are the significant impacts Hatfield made abroad while serving as Oregon's senator from 1967 to 1997.
On Jan. 26, Hatfield's former foreign policy advisors will reunite to discuss the late senator's legacy, including his efforts to stop the Vietnam War, slow the nuclear arms race, cut military expenditures, and promote international human rights. The roundtable discussion, scheduled from 5 to 7 p.m. in Rogers Music Center's Hudson Hall, will also explore the origins of the senator's interest in foreign policy, his philosophy behind his actions while in office, and the lasting value of his accomplishments. The event is open to the public, and a question-and-answer session will follow the talk.
Visiting history professor Christopher Foss will serve as moderator, and the roundtable participants include Gary Barbour '76, Walt Evans L'67, Wes Gransberg-Michaelson, Tom Getman, Jack Robertson and Rick Rolf.
The event is sponsored by Willamette University Archives and Special Collections, the History Department and the Politics Department.
