Alumnus, visiting English professor nominated for Oregon Book Awards

by Marketing & Communications,

Nick Zagone ’90 and Andrea Stolowitz, a visiting English professor, were nominated for Oregon Book Awards.

The Oregon Book Awards and Fellowships honor the state’s finest accomplishments by Oregon writers who work in genres of poetry, fiction, drama, literary nonfiction and literature for young readers.

“Simply put, the award lets me know that I am doing my job as an artist — creating plays that have an impact on those who read and see them,” says Stolowitz, who is working this year as a playwright in residence at English Theatre Berlin in Germany.

Both Stolowitz and Zagone and are in the running for the Angus L. Bowmer Award for Drama.

Stolowitz — who won a 2013 Oregon Book Award for her play, “Antarktikos,” was nominated this year for “Ithaka.” The play tells the story of Marine Captain Elaine Edwards, who explores the country to battle her demons after returning home from a tour in Afghanistan.

Zagone, who majored in theatre at Willamette, is the author of “Blood on the Books or the Powell’s Play.” The play relates the behind-the-scenes drama at the fabled, Portland-based book provider.

Winners will be announced April 13 in Portland.
